Kids, Kindness & Mother’s Day

This past Mother’s Day several of our writers embarked on our second Mother’s Day kindness challenge with their kids. We attached some of our hug statements to beautiful roses donated to us by our friends at Whole Foods in West Hartford Center, and each went out to different locations where our children handed out flowers to moms. I’ve done this many times with my daughter (on random days, not just Mother’s Day) and each time I am completely struck at how deeply a simple act of kindness touches people. I think it’s so important to teach kids about kindness and it’s never too early to start.

Here’s my girl talking about how being kind to people makes her feel (took this video right before we set out for Mother’s Day):

My daughter is typically on the shy side. But give her flowers and the knowledge that by doing something small for someone else she can help make them happy and she practically runs up to people! Like this woman, who she pretty much attacked with kindness as soon as she opened her car door!

I love seeing her light up. I love hearing her say that making people happy makes HER happy. I love hearing her say she’s a “kind girl.”

I also love witnessing how much of an impact giving someone a flower can have on them. One of the places we stopped at was a breakfast place and of course it was full of moms of all ages. Two moms cried, literally cried, when my girl gave them flowers. I embraced one of them and we had a long hug – she just hung on and I could feel how much the flower meant to her. She said she really needed it that day because she’s been having a hard time and I smiled the rest of the day thinking of that woman, hoping that we brought her some lasting happiness.

Without further ado, here are a bunch of really amazing photos of our children making moms happy on Mother’s Day. Enjoy and perhaps consider doing some random acts of kindness with YOUR kids too!

Here’s Kriste and her daughter spreading cheer in the Starbucks drive thru line:

Elise and her wife brought their crew to a nursing home:

Jenn and her girls gave out flowers in their neighborhood:

And Jessica took her son out for his first ever random acts of kindness and said that he absolutely LOVED it!

There you have it — another successful Mother’s Day kindness challenge! And we’ve decided to officially make it an annual tradition. There’s something beautiful and addicting about really connecting with other people, seeing their eyes fill with joy and remembering that we’re all human beings in this life together.
