Magical Monday: Grateful for Sh*t

Develop an attitude of gratitude and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation. ~ Brian Tracy

I like the quote above by Brian Tracy, because it says we should give thanks for EVERYTHING that happens to us ~ not just the good stuff, but everything, even the shit. That’s not an easy thing. Being grateful for the challenges that life hands us seems counter-intuitive, but as we all know deep-down, the challenges are where we grow the most. So this Magical Monday, I’m devoting my gratitude practice to some of the challenges I’ve faced in my life because they’ve shaped me into the super-awesome person I am today.

Life challenges that I’m grateful for:

* The eating disorder I had from age 16 to age 21. Even though this was a very difficult part of my life, it helped me have compassion and empathy as a personal trainer when others struggled with food issues.

* The 2 miscarriages I had before my first son was born. They helped me with my priorities, they taught me what to do and say when others are grieving and they helped put me deeply in touch with my intuition and discover the magic of pre-birth communication.

* The disagreements and fights my husband and I sometimes have because they always propel us to a new and deeper level of understanding.

* The times I fall short in my Mothering role because it helps me see how I really want to act and interact with my children. The times I yell reminds me of how better it feels not to yell.

* When I lose patience. It’s a good indicator that it’s time for self-nuturing.  And it’s a good reminder to take care of myself BEFORE I flat-line.

* When I’m too tired to do anything. The tiredness makes me less resistant and I’m forced to slow down. (Sometimes we all just need to slow down and do nothing!)

* When my older son is having trouble in social situations. This one isn’t easy to be grateful for, but I realize that we learn and grow together as we trouble-shoot how to act and react in uncomfortable environments. I’m having LOTS of practice being grateful for this one.

* When my 5 year old challenges my limiting beliefs of what he “should” wear and what he “should” eat. He’s helped me unlearn SO MANY things, as well as taught me to become more flexible, tolerant, trusting. Any time he pushes my buttons, I’m reminded to take a deep breath and look at the situation from a different, higher view.

* The times when I feel constricted, frustrated and stuck. These times are SO uncomfortable, but I know that I’m being pushed to get out of my comfort zones and explore new ways of doing and being.

Looking at life from the view of being grateful for EVERYTHING is truly a beautiful thing ~ it helps me not only appreciate the gifts in the beauty of life but it helps me look for the opportunities being presented when life hands me a big ol’ pile of shit. Someone once said that we should look at the shitty things in life like a compost pile ~ because from garbage, beautiful things can grow.

Much love to you this Magical Monday. ♥

  1. I so love your ability to make even the shitty stuff positive. I also feel like everything we experience is meant to teach us something so that we can grow, especially the crappy stuff. That doesn’t mean the crappy stuff doesn’t SUCK, oh it does, but it’s helpful to keep in the back of my mind to know that there’s something I’m meant to learn.
