1st Birthday Party Planning: Excel Sheet Style

I cannot believe that I am writing about my daughter’s first birthday party when it seems like just yesterday she was born. Before I became a mother I remember women telling me that the first year would go by so fast and it surely has.

Call me crazy, but I have been planning her birthday party since last December and I’ve even suckered my dear friend Kerry into helping me plan the bash; by coming over for bi-weekly planning meetings. Yes, you heard that correctly, meetings to review our  excel spreadsheets! I don’t know about other mothers, but I would be lost without my spreadsheets. I don’t know how anyone could remember all those birthday party planning details.

I thought long and hard about her first birthday party theme and came to the conclusion that it must be “pretty in pink.” We will be having lots of colorful tablecloths, decorations and the food will be just as bright. To help calm my nerves, some of the food will be catered by a local market in town and the rest will be made by myself and relatives. For dessert, I will be making a “smash cake” for our daughter and homemade shirley temple cupcakes for the guests. When it comes to birthday favors, I am making something very simple, homemade popcorn on the stove in clear plastic baggies with pink ribbon. On the baggies it will read, “Thanks for Popping-In.” Very cute don’t you think?

The only major issue that we will be facing is the weather. Since her birthday is April 20th, there is a chance of rain or just not being warm enough outside. While I could have the party in the house, I don’t think the 25 guests could fit in our house. Our backup location is our local fire department, where my husband is a member of. They have an adequate size recreational room downstairs that would be able to hold our guests. I’ve been praying for the past few weeks that the weather is at least 60 and sunny. Fingers crossed, we are trusting mother nature to bring us some nice weather.

Nonetheless, below are some photos of the party I am envisioning. Please let me know what you think and feel free to share any party planning tips!

  1. Hi Vivian- thanks for the reply. There is only going to be 2 other kids there, both cousins and a lot older than her. I’m not planning any activities on this birthday, but most likely next year will be a different story. To be honest, I’ve been planning this party for months, I’m burnt out at the thought of adding one more thing to that excel sheet 🙂 HAHA

I am like you, a perfectionist and I agree to keeping things low key. I over plan like you and then get so super stressed that I am a “you know what” the week of the party! LOL

Feel free to post pictures of your kids past parties – I would to see them, especially the traditional ceremonial birthday! 🙂

  2. Cute! I really like the party favors. Are there going to be other kids other than your own? Do you have any activities / goodies planned for them?

Our first birthday was a traditional ceremonial Korean birthday. I limited it to ONLY family (my mom/dad, and my brother and bro’s family) because I just didn’t get my act together in time. Our second birthday was a slightly different story – I did it at a local “Little Gym” and went all out. I’ve decided that I personally prefer to keep things low key because my issue is that I’m a perfectionist – if I plan something, I want it to be perfect and this means that I OVER plan. I’m going back to low key until the kids start asking for real birthday parties…

Take lots of pics and please post back!
