What works for me: WORKING.

So, I started a new job last week. It was a huge decision for us… to go from part time, working from home, super available for kids, no daycare, no security but LOTS of flexibility… to full time, outside of the home, daycare and before/after care and a whole lot of unknowns. But, ultimately, we decided to go for it.

And I couldn’t be happier with the decision.

I’ve realized that I am much more focused in every aspect of my life when I have a pretty set schedule. I’m more motivated at home: meals are planned, lunches are packed, clothes are ready, laundry is done (Well, washed and dried. I’m not a super hero, people.).

Also? Between you and me? I LOVE my job. (Yes, I know it’s only week two, but shush. Don’t rain on my parade. I love it.) It’s nice to be forced to do my hair and wear lovely clothes – with buttons and zippers. I appreciate my yoga pants so much MORE now that I can’t wear them all day.

Audrey is happy to be back in daycare. And I’m not taking it personally. I know we had a great time hanging out and I am really grateful I was able to have so much one-on-one time with her, but she’s a social butterfly. She loves her peeps at school. I took her to visit her new room the week before she started and she legitimately waved goodbye to me and sat down to paint a picture, like, “THANK GOD.”

Finally. I can CREATE.
Finally. I can CREATE.

I talked to grown ups all day — every day! I gave input on important projects, ate lunch at a leisurely pace, went to the bathroom ALONE and listened to music that is very inappropriate for children in the car. It. Was. FABULOUS.

Don’t get me wrong. I missed them. Like whoa. But, that was good for all of us. I’ve written before about how crazy full time working can be. Ahem. It can be. I’m sure I’ll have many more days and nights like that. But, for now? I’m singing the opposite tune. And isn’t that just how life goes? I don’t know.

I am, however, enjoying these small moments a whole lot, now that I don’t have access to them nearly as often…

  1. Congratulations! I felt the same way when my kids were little. HOWEVER, it wasn’t the best option and WORK for me was too, very much so. I was happier and more active, which is a benefit after having kids ;). And it is so true the moment you get home and have those moments with your kids you enjoy it even more! Congrats again Steph, glad to hear you are happy!

  2. Congrats, and love those pics. On a somewhat related note … in fact was it Ann who blogged about this recently? … I get the whole enjoyment of inappropriate music thing. For whatever reason, Nicki Minaj is doing it for me lately, but her mouth is waaaay too filthy for a two and a half year-old who seems to pick up new words instantly. Just the other day, I learned that the fresh-faced, doe-eyed young Bruno Mars is actually saying “Your sex takes me to paradise” in that one bouncy, catchy song that gets airplay everywhere right now. Your sex takes me to paradise?! Come on, man!!
