Fashion Forward Friday- My Mom is Showing!!

You might remember a while back when I introduced you to Birchbox.  And by introducing you to Birchbox, I really meant to tell you about the time my Mom was showing.  Yep.  No wardrobe malfunction, no dress stuck in the back of my opaque tights, but my Mom was showing.  In case you’re not familiar with the term, it literally means that, you, cool and fashion forward maven that you are, can still have a case of the Moms.  Meaning, you just said, did, or dressed in such a way that everyone within a 3 foot radius of where you’re standing has just figured out that you’re a Mom.  Oh, and you’d think I would’ve learned from my Birchbox experience not to let my mom show… at least in public, anyway.

Here’s how it went down.  As you already know from yesterday’s post, I went to a wedding last weekend.  Two amazing friends, an entire office full of my closest besties, open bar, delicious food, photo booth, and dancing ’till the wedding stopped.  But, before all of that, I had to dress myself for the occasion.  That task was an easy one.  A $69 silk Ella Dress from J.Crew, a pair of Lilly Pulitzer Gold McKim sandals, Betsey Johnson earrings, and a tiny Gucci bag.  But makeup?  Yeah, well, that’s a whole different story.  Even a girl who reads Glamour and Lucky magazines every month still needs to keep up on Allure.  In case you didn’t know, Allure is the magazine expert on all things make up.  Sadly, Allure is not in my mag rack, and after this wedding experience, I realized it needs to be front and center in my life.  My gorgeous and fresh faced friend, Ali, kindly offered to do my make up for the wedding.  Well, maybe that’s putting it a little lightly.  She basically told me she was doing my make up and there was no room for declining this offer.  After producing her a lackluster pile of eye shadow, pressed powder, concealer, and a pretty much used up sample tube of mascara, Ali laid it on me.  She looked me square in the eyes and said, “Your Mom is showing!”  Literally.  Still today, I don’t know how she managed to pull off that miracle with the beauty scraps I placed in front of her.  She was actually pretty surprised at how put together and fashion forward I can be when it comes to clothing, accessories, shoes and handbags, but other than that, man my MOM WAS SHOWING!  I have the make up collection of a mom!  And granted the little that I had was pretty good stuff- Smashbox eye color, Lancome eye liner pencil, and Trish McEvoy brushes, I need to get my mom together and, um, woman up!

This free life lesson from Ali really shed some light on the subject of mom transformation.  I was always the one saying, “When I’m a mom I’m still going to get my hair done, eyebrows waxed, and nails manicured.  I’m not gonna let myself go!”  Well, I kinda sorta did!  Ali has graciously offered to come with me to Sephora to help me pick out a new make up wardrobe.  I told her that she’s going to need to be my advocate so as not to spend more money on the same old neutral cosmetics, yet help me from spending $50  on a tube of Armani mascara.  I trust her with my face, and as you can see, Ali is quite the miracle worker!

  1. Kate- you bring sparkle to my life! I’ll never forget when we were all styling for our photo shoot in your bathroom and you opened up your drawer of GLITTER! I was literally awe-struck! How can you not have a good day when you have glitter on your eyes?!

  2. Yes! Mary Grace- eyes are everything for me right now! After I had Jake I invested in a complete concealer kit from Benefit- it is literally a little book filled with concealers for under eye, eye lids, blemish spots, etc. Whenever I style my eyes properly, it definitely shows. And lord, does it help when they write down the instructions step-by-step!

  3. Sofia- i’m scared of Bare Minerals!! All of the tiny pots totally overwhelm me, and yet you are probably the 15th girl to recommend them. And thanks for the tip on the Bobbi Brown eye pencil- i’m always on the hunt for good liners.

  4. The only makeup I consistently wear is concealer and I know nothing about labels ~ so it tickles me to no end how much I LOVE your Friday column Marie! BTW I had not read your birchbox post before and so enjoyed that one too! You rock and I adore you!

  5. I’m glad you brought up the make-up issue. I never leave the house without blush, eyeliner, and lipgloss but it wasn’t until after I had my baby that I was taught how to do my eyes correctly. Last year my friends and I did a spa day at the Norwich Inn and Spa. They offer a FREE eye make-up application lesson and I was given written instructions on how to apply and what colors to use. It was so easy and makes a huge difference. Loved this!

  6. Darling you look beautiful…but if you are in the market to overhauling your makeup drawer, can I recommend Bare Minerals? I love their makeup. It covers everything, feels light and makes you glow. I always get complements when I have my “face” on. I started with their kit and just replenish when I run out. Go to one of their stores where the associates can help you match your skin tone and recommend great product. I also love Bobbi Brown for their lipstick and eye pencil.
