My daughter loves being read to and reading books (in her own words) to us – which I find absolutely adorable! One of her favorites is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. She received the book and stuffed animal caterpillar to go along with it for her first birthday. I had seen the idea for creating a caterpillar using handprints and knew Caroline would be excited to create her own very hungry caterpillar!
What you will need:
- Paint (I used green, brown, red, yellow)
- Paintbrush or paint sponge (to put paint on your child’s hand)
- Paper (I used thick white cardstock)
Step 1: Paint the palm of your child’s hand with green paint and their fingers (except for the thumb) with brown paint. Have your child put their handprint on the paper four times (adding more paint to their hand before doing each handprint) making the body and legs of the caterpillar.
Step 2: Paint the palm of your child’s hand with red paint to make the head of the caterpillar.
Step 3: After the paint was dry I added the details (antennae, eyes and nose).
Caroline loved the final result and of course we just had to read The Very Hungry Caterpillar when we were done! I just love tying art to literacy!!!
We would LOVE to see your Create it Saturday creations! Please upload a picture to our facebook page!!!
