CT’s Open House Day!

Did you know that June 9th is open house day in Connecticut?? More than 150 Connecticut destinations from across the state – everything from the Dinosaur State Park in Rocky Hill, to Lake Compounce Family Theme Park in Bristol, to the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport – are offering Connecticut residents discounted or free admission, free gifts or special activities! We’ve looked through all of the cool activities planned for the day and picked some, by region, that we think are great for working mommas (and in many cases the whole family!). Let us know if you’re planning to attend any of these.

Hartford County (full list available here):

  • Lake Compounce Family Theme Park, Bristol – From 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. admission is reduced to $10 (plus tax). Park is open from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Hartford Baseball Grounds at Colt Meadows, Hartford – Watch a 1860s-era baseball game and bring lawn chairs, blankets and a picnic, enjoy the game and get a $1.00 off the price of a vintage soda pop. Offered from 11 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Eleanor Buck Wolf Nature Center, Wethersfield – Open to visitors from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. with free outdoor activities including live animal demonstrations, petting zoo, music and more. Outdoor activities from noon until 5 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • New Britain Museum of Art, New Britain – Free admission from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Enjoy the Cafe on the Park from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. (Enjoy some lovely art as adults or make this a family trip!)
  • Imagine Nation Children’s Museum, Bristol – From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., visitors receive a complimentary ice cream cone with sprinkles in the 1940’s old fashioned soda fountain. Check out the new outdoor learning park. (Family fun!)
  • Lutz Children’s Museum, Manchester — Free admission from noon until 5 p.m., including “Touch-a-Truck” where visitors can climb inside big trucks and heavy equipment. Free shuttles will connect the museum with other sites throughout the town. (Family fun!)

Fairfield County (full list available here):

  • Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, Bridgeport – Free admission for the first 100 visitors from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Maritime Aquarium, Norwalk – From 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., visitors will receive $2 off the Aquarium’s Adventure Pass; admission to the Aquarium and IMAX movie. (Family fun!)
  • Danbury Railway Museum, Danbury – From 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., receive a complimentary train ride with a paid admission when you bring in the local Open House Day brochure, or an advertisement of the event. (Family fun!)
  • Bellarmine Museum of Art, Fairfield – Free family day with drop-in crafts for kids (1 p.m.- 4 p.m.), storytime in the gallery and special tours for families. Open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. (Family fun!)

Litchfield County (full list available here):

  • Karen Rossi Studios, Norfolk – Free kids craft projects including rock painting, stick sculpture, and art from nature. Open studio from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Pratt Nature Center, New Milford – From 10 a.m. until noon, visitors will get to meet the animals. (Family fun!)
  • Railroad Museum of New England, Thomaston – Receive a $1 discount off regular priced tickets on a scenic train ride. Plus, receive an 8-pack of RMNE postcards per family. Departs 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Ellsworth Hill Orchard & Berry Farm, Sharon — Visitors will receive a special discount on pick-your-own strawberries. Open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. (Relax and pick your own strawberries, bring the kids along if you want!)

New Haven County (full list available here):

  • Allis-Bushnell House, Madison – Free admission from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Costumed interpreters guide visitors through the 1785 home of Cornelius Bushnell. Each room in the historic house features a specific day and event in the history of Madison. (Family fun, who doesn’t love costumed activites?!)
  • Gouveia Vineyards, Wallingford – From 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. children can get their face painted, families take tractor rides around the vineyard, treats for children, and hourly raffles (1 p.m.-3 p.m.). (Fun for the working momma, I guess you could bring your kids too)
  • Paradise Hills Vineyard and Winery, Wallingford – Vineyard opened from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. offering free hayrides through the vineyard and raffles. (Fun for the working momma. If you bring your kids, let them take a hayride while you pick yourself out a nice bottle of wine.)
  • Bishop’s Orchards Farm Market & Winery, Guilford – From 8 a.m. until 7 p.m., sample complimentary products, kids receive a fun giveaway, and browse around the Farmer’s Market. (Family fun!)

Middlesex County (full list available here):

  • Tanger Outlet Center, Westbrook – Open House Day customers will receive a free $5 coupon book by showing a valid Connecticut ID. Stores open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. (Working momma fun! Shopping!!!!!!!!!)
  • Chester/Hadlyme Ferry, Chester – From 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., visitors can ride for free aboard Selden III, the second oldest continuously operating ferry service in the state, which crosses the scenic Connecticut River near Gillette Castle State Park. (Family fun!)
  • Buttonwood Tree Performing Arts & Cultural Center, Middletown – From 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., enjoy outdoor concerts, free books and CDs, original artwork for sale, and refreshments. Participate in the workshop for empowerment “Aligned with Source” from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. (Family fun!)

New London County (full list available here):

  • Meiklem Kiln Works & Centerspace Wellness Studio, Bozrah – From 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., there will be ongoing studio tours, pottery demonstrations and visit the gift shop. Half price off yoga classes at 9 a.m. (Nice and relaxing for us working moms)
  • Dalice Elizabeth Winery, Preston –– Winery open from noon until 5 p.m. Buy one and get one tasting free with this listing.  (Fun for working mommas! Leave the kiddos at home!)
  • MucCulloch Farm, Old Lyme – Historic farm and private breeder of Morgan horses will be open to visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open barn with three new foals and“Horse and Buggy” tack and tag sale. (Family fun!)
  • Florence Griswold Museum, Old Lyme – Free entry to museum from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus special access to GardenFest activities, including “Blooms with a View” (15 stunning floral arrangements that interpret works of art) and “Pleasure Gardens: A Miniature Maharaja Place” (a miniature fantasy creation based on several maharaja palaces in India). (Family fun!)

Tolland County:

  • Nathan Hale Homestead, Coventry – Free admission from noon until 4 p.m. (Family fun!)
  • Song-a-Day Music Center, Coventry – From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., visitors receive in-house specials, with live musical performances by the students and drawing for musical items; refreshments for visitors. Also, meet and greet instructors. (Family fun!)
  • Old Tolland County Jail and Museum, Tolland – Open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. offering visitors complimentary historic postcards and children’s books while supplies last. (Family fun!)

Windham County (full list available here):

  • Farmer’s Cow, Fairvue Farms, Woodstock – Visit the farm from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. and enjoy complimentary farm tours along with samples of The Farmer’s Cow beverages. (Family fun! Also on a side-note, we LOVE the Farmer’s Cow!!!!!!!!!)
  • Creamery Brook Bison, Brooklyn – 40-minute wagon ride to see the bison at 2 p.m., followed by a craft project for children. Rides are $5 per person (normally $10). (Family fun!)
